The base is half the look — and all of the seal
A hookah base (or vase) does three jobs: it holds the water that cools and filters the smoke, it anchors the whole setup, and it's the largest visible piece of glass in the room. Choose well and the hookah looks finished; choose badly and even a premium stem wobbles and leaks.
Fit comes first. Russian-style stems plug into the base with a grommet seal; German-style stems screw on. The neck opening and the stem's downstem length must match, or the water level will never sit right — every product here notes its system and dimensions. Crystal bases are the heavyweight, light-catching upgrade; standard glass is lighter and easier to handle daily.
Water level rule from our lounge floor: cover the downstem's diffuser slits by about an inch. Too little and the draw is harsh; too much and every pull fights you. Find your base above, and keep a spare grommet from hookah parts in the drawer.
